Packing ceramics so they arrive in one piece: the workshop checklist
A broken piece costs you the sale, the refund and the review. Pack like the carrier will drop the box — because they will.
Carriers stack, drop and toss boxes. Your packing has to survive a one-meter fall onto concrete. The rule: every piece floats in the center, touching nothing hard, cushioned on all six sides.
What you need
- A box that leaves 5 cm of space around the piece on every side
- Bubble wrap or corrugated wrap
- Paper or air pillows for fill
- Strong tape
- A "Fragile" label (helps a little; good packing helps more)
The method
- Wrap the piece in 2-3 layers of bubble wrap; tape it closed so it cannot unwrap.
- Wrap handles, spouts and rims separately — they break first.
- Line the bottom of the box with 5 cm of fill.
- Center the piece; fill every gap so it cannot shift when you shake the box.
- For two pieces, wrap each and add a cardboard divider between them.
- Fill the top, close, and shake: if you hear or feel movement, add more.
Before it leaves the workshop
- Shake test passed (no movement)
- Every side cushioned 5 cm
- Handles/rims double-wrapped
- Tape all seams in an H pattern
